Why I paint such large paintings
Expansion
The joy of unfolding
I still remember lying by the sea under the open starry sky,
looking up and feeling so wonderfully small
and at the same time embedded in the whole universe.
The sky seemed huge to me, yes, boundless...
a feeling of awe and deep trust arose.
If I have a place in this vast world and am part of all this,
then I can let go, surrender and trust,
because heaven and earth hold me.

This is roughly how I fell asleep outside many times
and roughly how I can describe the deeply satisfying,
saturated feeling when I stand in front of a huge white canvas
to paint it:
I fall into it...into the color, into its size
- through it I have the opportunity to let the art flow freely
and without limits.
As soon as I feel that the picture is not wide enough
or that I want to go deeper into it, I simply add more canvases.

My canvases grow with my own permission to expand,
to unfold, to develop.
I didn't allow myself that in the past.
I often painted small and narrow, but I rarely experienced such joy and free flow. It resembled an inner narrowness.
Maybe the “big painting” also has something to do with my stature: 181cm tall with terribly long arms.
When I stand in front of a canvas of stately size and can stretch out both arms with the brushes in my hand while painting,
it is as if my heart is widening.
There is a noticeable stretching in the chest area.
Opening.
I paint with my whole body.
Sometimes it feels like a dance between
paintbrush, canvas, God and hand:
all one, very closely related.
Size gives space to accept one's own, new expanse.
Filling the room, the paintings invite you to dive in.
They give you a walk in the spirit, a piece of garden,
a breeze of the sea and no matter where they hang,
they open up new horizons.
Their format makes it easier to look into them. It is a gateway that opens to our inner world, to our
dreams, places of longing or sensual loves.
I paint large because I sincerely like the abundance:
the full range of colors, shapes, possibilities.
Art and life are one.
And so the works can be large.
Life is great.
Just like you!
-May they reflect the greatness in all of us.
